Two people have been arrested after an allegedly stolen car was driven towards police in Geelong, prompting officers to fire shots at the vehicle. The incident occurred when the car crashed into a school bus before reversing and driving in the direction of at least one officer.
Footage posted to social media shows the Kia Optima reversing into the bus, with young children heard screaming as two shots ring out. The ABC understands students from Sacred Heart College and St Joseph's College were on the bus at the time.
The car, alleged to have been stolen from New South Wales, was spotted by a police helicopter near the intersection of Princes Highway and Roebuck Street in Newtown about 3:40pm. Victoria Police confirmed officers shot at the car as the alleged offenders tried to flee, with the vehicle then colliding with another car.
A 37-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman allegedly tried to flee on foot but were arrested nearby. The man sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was taken to hospital under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries. A female driver from another vehicle also suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
Witness Shane Griffiths, who was driving nearby, told ABC radio he heard two gunshots and saw about 20 police cars arrive. Latrobe Terrace was closed in both directions between Ryrie Street and McKillop Street, with long delays reported.
