New Shellharbour CEO Pledges to Improve Workplace Culture

Wayde Peterson has been formally appointed as the new CEO of Shellharbour City Council, with a commitment to enhancing workplace culture. Peterson, who previously served as acting CEO after Mike Archer stepped aside amid allegations from a staff Christmas party, acknowledged the need for continuous improvement.

Peterson, who began his career at the council as an engineering cadet in 2000, praised the staff and expressed confidence in the organisation's culture. 'I think, speaking of culture and things like that, it's always a journey, it's something we've always got to strive to improve,' he said.

Mayor Chris Homer revealed that the council received around 60 applications for the CEO position, which was narrowed down to three finalists. Homer described the selection process as extremely difficult due to the high calibre of candidates. 'I'm very happy to say that Wayde's gotten the role, and I think it's been universally liked,' he added.

Peterson identified financial stability as a key early focus, noting the challenges of ageing infrastructure and rising costs. He highlighted the Shell Cove project as a significant financial success that has helped the council remain in the black, but acknowledged the need to plan for when that revenue stream ends.

Another priority for Peterson is Shellharbour Airport, which he said has the ninth largest catchment area in Australia but ranks 72nd in terms of usage. He emphasised the need to explore opportunities to expand destinations and travel options.
