Kiama residents and visitors should expect more parking fines as the council has employed two new compliance officers dedicated solely to parking enforcement. Previously, the council had only one full-time equivalent position, with officers also handling other compliance areas.
According to a council spokesperson, the increased focus on parking may lead to more infringements. The spokesperson urged the community to remain respectful when interacting with staff, noting that abuse in person, over the phone, or online is unacceptable.
In the 2023-24 financial year, Kiama Council conducted 434 parking patrols, issuing fines totaling approximately $107,000. The new inspectors will leave paper infringement notices, as required by new NSW regulations that took effect in July this year.
The change marks a shift from the paperless system introduced by the NSW Government in 2020, which many councils, including Kiama, had adopted. Under that system, fines were sent by post to the vehicle owner.
