New South Wales Police are planning a potential excavation near Newcastle as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 16-year-old Gordana Kotevski, who was last seen in November 1994. The teenager was abducted from Powell Street in Charlestown after leaving a shopping centre to walk to her aunt's home.
Investigators under Strike Force Bambil recently searched properties in Edgeworth and West Wallsend, seizing several items of interest. Police have not disclosed what was seized but confirmed the items are undergoing forensic examination.
Lake Macquarie Police District Commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman said the leads could result in further searches, including a possible excavation. 'During an excavation, we would be looking for anything that may have been used in the commission of the crime,' she said.
Superintendent Chapman urged anyone with information to come forward, noting a $1 million reward remains on offer. 'It may be something that seemed insignificant at the time, or something someone has kept to themselves for years,' she stated.
Gordana's mother, Peggy Kotevski, expressed mixed emotions, saying the developments brought 'a little bit of relief but also anger.' Aunt Julie Talevski encouraged the public to contact police, saying, 'If anybody has any information, if they could please come forward.'
