The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Crete, Greece, on its way to Gaza. The flotilla, which included Australian participants, was described by Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, as 'provocative'.
According to the flotilla's social media posts, Israeli naval forces boarded and disabled several boats in international waters. The crew reported being approached by military speedboats that pointed lasers and semi-automatic weapons.
Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that the detained crew members would be taken to Greece in coordination with the Greek government, not Israel. He urged those interested in humanitarian aid to Gaza to use established channels.
The flotilla consisted of over 50 boats that departed from France, Spain, and Italy. Jane Salmon, media liaison for the Australian delegation, confirmed that 14 Australians had set sail from Italy, with six aboard intercepted vessels, including Surya McEwen, Dr. Bianca Pullman Webb, Ethan Floyd, Neve O'Connor, Zack Schofield, and Cameron Tribe.
Australian Greens leader Larissa Waters condemned the interception as a breach of international law. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade offered consular assistance but noted limited capacity due to the conflict. The department urged Australians not to attempt to break the naval blockade and to deliver aid through established channels.
