A 38-year-old woman accused of orchestrating a home invasion that led to the fatal shooting of a Canberra man has been denied bail in the ACT Supreme Court. Nicole Williams, who is reportedly battling cancer, will remain in custody until her trial later this year.
Glenn Walewicz died after being shot in the neck and chest when he answered his door to three masked individuals in June 2021. Police allege the intended target was a different house, and the killing was a case of mistaken identity during a planned robbery for drugs and money.
Court documents reveal that Williams is accused of providing the gun used in the shooting and recruiting an 18-year-old who has since pleaded guilty to murder. Text messages tendered in court show Williams discussing the recruitment and later expressing knowledge of the shooting details before they were publicly released.
Prosecutor Anthony Williamson argued the messages demonstrated a strong case against Williams, including her alleged role in identifying targets and arranging the disposal of the weapon. Associate Justice Verity McWilliam found the evidence relevant and deemed the wait until trial, expected later this year, not unreasonable.
Williams faces seven charges, including attempted aggravated burglary, recruiting a child to commit a crime, and accessory after the fact of murder. The 18-year-old shooter and another man, Gary Taylor, have both pleaded guilty to murder, while charges against a 12-year-old were dropped.
