A man accused of terror-related offences in the small Western Australian town of Bindoon has been formally charged with six offences, including possessing bullet-proof clothing and ammunition.
Details of the charges
Jayson Joseph Michaels, 31, appeared via video link in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The charges include:
- Possession of bullet-proof clothing without lawful excuse
- Possession of ammunition without a licence
- Making a threat to kill
- Three counts of possessing a prohibited weapon
The court heard that police allege Michaels had acquired the items as part of plans to carry out an attack. He was arrested in Bindoon, about 80 kilometres north-east of Perth, in August.
Background and investigation
Michaels was initially charged with one count of doing an act in preparation for a terrorist act, but that charge has now been replaced with the six new charges. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Western Australia Police conducted a joint investigation leading to the arrest.
Police will allege Michaels was inspired by extremist ideology and had been planning an attack on a public place. The bullet-proof clothing and ammunition were discovered during a search of his home.
Court proceedings
Magistrate Elizabeth Woods adjourned the case to November 14 for a committal mention. Michaels did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.
Defence lawyer David Manera told the court that further discussions with the prosecution were expected before the next hearing.
Community response
The Bindoon community has been shaken by the allegations. Local residents expressed shock that such activities could occur in their quiet town. Community leader Sarah Johnson said, “We are a close-knit community and this has been very unsettling for everyone. We trust the legal process will deliver justice.”
The AFP has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Authorities have not disclosed the specific target of the alleged plot.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to counter terrorism and ensure public safety.
