Police in Melbourne are conducting a large-scale search for a 19-year-old man who allegedly went on a crime spree early this morning, involving armed robbery, car theft, and a police chase. The suspect, identified as David Paul Rowntree, is considered extremely dangerous, and authorities have taken the unusual step of releasing his name and photo to the public.
The rampage began before 3 a.m. when Rowntree allegedly broke into a home in Balwyn, stole a car, and then held up a service station at gunpoint. He later stole another vehicle and led police on a dramatic chase, during which several cars were rammed, including a police car. The chase ended near the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Police quickly shut down the MCG area, halting trams, trains, and pedestrian traffic, but were unable to locate Rowntree. After reopening the area more than two hours later, officers found a balaclava and a shotgun near the MCG, but no other evidence of the suspect's whereabouts.
Superintendent Rod Wilson expressed concern that Rowntree, who has a criminal history of nearly 70 offenses and was released from a youth justice facility earlier this year, may attempt to end the situation violently. "We're extremely concerned that this chap may choose to end this in an unsavoury way," Wilson said, urging Rowntree to surrender peacefully.
Police have deployed the Special Operations Group, Critical Incident Response teams, and other resources to track down Rowntree. They are appealing to his friends and family to contact police if they have any information. Wilson emphasized the urgency, stating, "We desperately need to bring this person into custody."
