A 40-year-old man has died in hospital five weeks after being attacked by two American Staffordshire Terriers in Tregear, Sydney's west. The man, who was not the owner of the dogs, sustained injuries to his ears, face, abdomen and chest during the attack on an unspecified date.
He went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Westmead Hospital in critical condition, where he was placed in an induced coma. He died on Friday, according to the ABC.
The attack occurred while a 39-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter were visiting the man. The girl was bitten on the back and the woman on the forearm as they tried to flee. Both were treated at Westmead Hospital for minor injuries.
The dogs were surrendered to the council and later euthanased. A report on the man's death will be prepared for the coroner.
This is believed to be the second death connected to a dog attack in NSW since the state government began recording attack severity in July 2015. The first was a one-year-old girl who died in March last year after being attacked by the family dog in Inverell.
NSW dog attack records show a slight increase in incidents. There were 4,770 recorded attacks on humans or animals in the 12 months to June 30, 2018, up from 4,643 in the previous year. Separately, a 70-year-old woman was bitten on the hand during a walk in Chester Hill this morning and taken to Auburn Hospital.
