A 40-year-old man has died in hospital five weeks after being attacked by two dogs in Tregear, Sydney's west. The man was staying at a home with two American Staffordshire Terriers when the attack occurred, leaving him with injuries to his ears, face, abdomen and chest.
He went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where he was placed in an induced coma. He died on Friday, according to the ABC.
The man was not the owner of the dogs. At the time of the attack, he was being visited by a 39-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter. The girl was bitten on the back and her mother on the forearm as they tried to flee. Both were treated for minor injuries at Westmead Hospital.
The dogs were surrendered to the council and later euthanased. A report on the man's death will be prepared for the coroner.
This is the second death connected to a dog attack in NSW since the State Government began recording attack severity in July 2015. The first was a one-year-old girl who died in March last year after being attacked by a family dog in Inverell.
Figures from the NSW Office of Local Government show a slight increase in dog attack incidents across the state. There were 4,770 recorded incidents in the 12 months to June 30, 2018, up from 4,643 in the previous year. Separately, police reported a 70-year-old woman was bitten on the hand during a walk in Chester Hill this morning and taken to Auburn Hospital.
