Rhys McNaughton, a 24-year-old teacher and athlete from Torquay, took his own life three weeks ago, leaving friends and family devastated. Described as a dead ringer for Hollywood star Zac Efron, Rhys appeared to have it all—good looks, a toned body, a loving support network, and a promising career. His sudden death has prompted friends to rally for Movember, a campaign focused on men's mental health and suicide prevention.
Rochelle Nicole launched the 'Hotter than Zac Efron' Movember team in Rhys's memory. The team has grown to 147 members and raised over $31,000, topping the national leaderboard for funds raised. Movember's Keiran Ryan praised the initiative, calling the support 'phenomenal' and noting the overwhelming comments on the team's page.
Friend James Healey, who shared accommodation with Rhys at Southern Cross University, remembered him as someone who always made time for others. 'He was the sort of guy who would always have time for you whether it was 3am or 5pm,' Healey said. 'He was up for fun, down for a serious chat, and always made sure you were alright.' Healey also highlighted Rhys's rugby prowess, noting he 'absolutely smashed anyone on the field.'
In a bid to raise awareness, Healey reached out to Ellen DeGeneres and Zac Efron, hoping to share Rhys's story. 'I just thought I may as well write a story that's very interesting about one of my great friends,' he explained. Photographer John Bortolin, who featured Rhys in his book 'Manscapes,' said he would donate proceeds from future sales to suicide prevention.
Rugby teammate Will Latham described Rhys as a 'phenomenal' player and a 'truly incredible human being.' Latham noted that Rhys became one of the most dominant open side flankers in Far North Coast rugby, winning two titles with the Wollongbar-Alstonville Pioneers. 'He made a huge difference to that team and to many people's lives, including mine,' Latham wrote.
