RAA Warns Drivers About Fake Road Rule Posts

The Royal Automobile Association of South Australia (RAA) has issued a warning about false online posts claiming new road rules, including curfews for older drivers and bans on eating while driving. The organisation says it has received numerous calls from concerned members.

RAA safety and infrastructure senior manager Charles Mountain stated that the misinformation, which also includes claims that headlights must be on at all times, is causing confusion. He emphasised that no imminent changes to South Australia's road rules are expected.

Mountain noted that the bogus posts often use urgent language like “new laws taking effect next week” and include photos of police or politicians to appear credible. He advised drivers to look for the lack of official sources and the presence of excessive ads and pop-ups as signs of false information.

Regarding eating while driving, Mountain clarified that there are no new laws, but drivers can be fined if eating or drinking causes them to lose control of their vehicle. He also encouraged using headlights during the day on regional roads, though it is not a legal requirement.

The RAA urges drivers to rely on official outlets for genuine road rule updates and to contact their Road Rules team with any doubts.
