A community in Sydney's north is in mourning after a devastating car crash claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby on Friday night.
The Tragic Incident in Hornsby
The 33-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, was walking along George Street in Hornsby shortly after 8pm. As she passed the entrance to a car park, a silver Kia Carnival had slowed to allow her to cross.
Tragically, at that moment, a white BMW rear-ended the stationary Kia, causing it to lurch forward and strike the pregnant pedestrian.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency services rushed to the scene and provided critical medical treatment. The woman was transported to Westmead Hospital in a critical and unstable condition. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, she and her unborn baby both tragically passed away.
The drivers of both vehicles, a 48-year-old man in the Kia and a 19-year-old P-plater in the BMW, were uninjured. They were both taken to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory testing as part of the police investigation.
Police Investigation Underway
Following initial enquiries, police arrested the 19-year-old BMW driver at a home on Millewa Avenue in Wahroonga around 12.45am on Saturday.
A crime scene was established on George Street as forensic officers and crash investigators began their work to determine the exact circumstances of the collision.
Police have confirmed that no other occupants were in either vehicle at the time of the crash. They are urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or mobile phone vision of the incident to contact them immediately.
