A Perth-based team of local mums has launched a unique housekeeping service called Another Mother, offering emotional support and domestic labour for mothers in need. Founded by single mum Hannah Purvey-Tyrer about two years ago, the service provides cleaning, decluttering, organising, laundry, and errand-running like grocery shopping.
Ms Purvey-Tyrer, originally from the UK, moved to Fremantle before COVID, leaving her family behind. After her son was born in 2019, she experienced postnatal depression and anxiety, and later her husband came out as gay, leading to their separation. She realised that small acts of help, like a mum coming to make tea and clean, made a huge difference.
Another Mother employs other mums who understand motherhood's challenges. The service goes beyond basic cleaning, including tasks like assembling IKEA furniture and washing windows. It also offers specialist packages for postpartum and pregnant mums in their third trimester who struggle with household chores.
Currently, five women are employed, servicing about 25 families a week across Perth's South Metro area. Demand is high, with a waitlist, and plans to expand north of the river. Ms Purvey-Tyrer emphasises the need for a 'contemporary village' to support mums, especially those living away from extended family or with FIFO partners.
