Interior trends may come and go, but natural timber remains a staple for Australian designers and stylists due to its unique and enduring qualities. Its natural warmth and subtle grain variations are difficult to replicate with synthetic materials, making it a preferred choice for adding texture, interest, and durability to modern architecture.
Timber and wood veneer finishes soften the lines of contemporary spaces while offering environmental benefits. Wood is sustainable, renewable, recyclable, biodegradable, and requires less energy to process than many alternatives, making it an eco-friendly option for homeowners.
Interior designers Agi Bartha and Carlie Fraser of Hygge Design recently incorporated natural timber and stone into a kitchen renovation for Carlie's own home in Victoria. The residence, built in the 1890s, was redesigned using Scandinavian principles of simplicity and warmth while respecting its heritage.
Carlie emphasized the importance of timber selection, choosing walnut veneer from Timberwood Panels for its depth of tone and organic grain. The cabinetry was paired with quartzite from CDK Stone, selected for its soft movement and tonal variation. 'It's a quiet luxury. We didn't want to overwhelm the space. Just two materials, beautiful timber and elegant stone, both with soul,' Carlie said.
The renovation paid meticulous attention to detail, from timber wall panelling to integrated appliances and quirky brass feet for the island. Carlie noted that navigating the kitchen's finer details was rewarding, and the result is something the team is incredibly proud of.
