Son Charged with Murder of Mother in Mareeba

A 34-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his 54-year-old mother in Mareeba, Far North Queensland. Police allege an altercation occurred the night before the woman's body was discovered.

Officers were called to a property on Downs Street in Mareeba, approximately 64 kilometres west of Cairns, at around 7:15am on Thursday. They found the woman's body on the verandah with injuries to her upper body and head.

The man has been charged with three offences, including one count each of murder and misconduct of a corpse by interfering. Detective Inspector Kevin Goan stated that the initial call was made by another of the woman's sons.

Police have not confirmed whether a weapon was used, as forensic investigations are ongoing. They are urging anyone who was near the address between 3:30pm Wednesday and 7:15am Thursday with vision or information to come forward.

The suspect is due to appear in the Atherton Magistrate's Court on Friday. Support services have been provided to the family during this difficult time.
