A 26-year-old woman has died after being struck by a car on the Kwinana Freeway near Mandjoogoordap Road in Stake Hill on Thursday night. The victim has been identified as Ebony Somerville, from Collie.
Police say Somerville ran out of petrol and exited her blue Holden Commodore sedan with another woman. They walked briefly along the northbound lane before Somerville was hit by a red Mitsubishi Outlander.
The driver of the Outlander stopped at the scene, but Somerville sustained critical injuries and died at the scene, according to WA Police.
Former youth worker Storm McLarty identified Somerville in a GoFundMe campaign raising money for her family and funeral costs. McLarty described Somerville as a “loyal friend” and “free spirit” who had a “fierce love for her family and friends.”
McLarty told 7NEWS.com.au that the friend who was with Somerville has been surrounded by family and friends since the incident. Somerville’s mother, Debbie Wilkes, has asked for privacy as she grieves.
The Collie community has expressed shock and support for the family. The GoFundMe page has raised over $3,300 as of Friday.
