Great Northern Super Crisp has been crowned Australia's top-selling beer for the fifth year in a row, according to market research firm Circana and data from breweries and bottle shops. The mid-strength beer, originally launched to rival Corona, is most commonly purchased in 30-can packs.
The top five best-selling beers in Australia are Great Northern Super Crisp, Carlton Dry, XXXX Gold, Coopers Pale Ale, and VB. Independent beer expert Matt Kirkegaard said the beer's success was unsurprising, noting its clear bottle and easy-drinking nature challenged traditional notions of beer.
Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, acquired by Lion for $500 million, is now the company's number one distributed tap beer. The beer, originally named Draught Ale and rebranded to Pacific Ale, uses Galaxy hops for a tropical aroma and is considered an icon of the Australian craft beer movement.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese fulfilled an election promise to pause tax increases on kegged beer for two years. The freeze applies only to beers on tap at licensed venues, excluding packaged beer and spirits. Alcohol taxes typically rise twice a year, with rates varying by alcohol content, container type, and production method.
