A 61-year-old man has died and a 46-year-old woman has been seriously injured in a house fire in Hackham West, Adelaide's south. Firefighters were called to the home on Amsterdam Road just before 8:30am on Saturday.
Upon arrival, crews found flames and smoke coming from the front room. The man was pulled from the burning property but died at the scene. The woman escaped through a front window and was taken to Flinders Medical Centre with life-threatening injuries, including lacerations and burns.
MFS Commander Wayne Trezise said firefighters provided first aid to the woman and then entered the home, finding the man on a bed. About two dozen firefighters took 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, and damage to the house is estimated at $200,000. Neighbour Pamela Jenkins reported seeing smoke and flames from her bedroom window, while another neighbour, Kevin, said he heard an explosion before the house went up.
The road near the scene has been closed, and police are asking pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.
