Lauren Bravo, a fashion journalist, decided to break up with fast fashion for a year. She pledged to buy no new clothes, avoiding payday hauls and bad day pick-me-ups. The goal was to step away from one of the most exploitative and wasteful industries on the planet.
Bravo acknowledged that for many people, not shopping is a default state due to lack of funds or interest. However, as a woman in the fashion world, she felt the pressure to constantly shop. She noted that men often proudly declare they never buy clothes, ignoring the societal pressure women face to care about their appearance.
Despite the challenges, Bravo found benefits. She saved money and time, reading more books and avoiding existential crises in changing rooms. Charity shops filled the gap left by high street stores, and she learned to appreciate clothes as cultural currency and self-expression.
Bravo concluded that while clothes can be empowering, they can also cause anxiety. By taking a break from shopping, she gained perspective and reduced the power clothes held over her life.
