Summer is the perfect time to experiment with cocktails, and mixologist Mina Holland has shared six refreshing recipes that are sure to impress at any gathering. From a fruity watermelon daiquiri to a fiery jalapeño margarita, these drinks are designed to be simple yet sophisticated.
Watermelon Daiquiri
This twist on the classic daiquiri uses fresh watermelon for a sweet and vibrant flavor. According to Holland, the key is to use ripe watermelon and a good-quality white rum. The recipe calls for 60ml white rum, 30ml fresh lime juice, 20ml simple syrup, and 100g cubed watermelon. Blend all ingredients with ice until smooth, then strain into a chilled glass.
Jalapeño Margarita
For those who like a bit of heat, the jalapeño margarita delivers. Holland suggests muddling two slices of jalapeño with 60ml tequila, 30ml fresh lime juice, and 20ml agave syrup. Shake with ice and strain into a salt-rimmed glass. The spice level can be adjusted by adding more or fewer jalapeño slices.
Basil Smash
This herbaceous cocktail is a refreshing choice for hot days. Combine 60ml gin, 30ml fresh lemon juice, 20ml simple syrup, and a handful of fresh basil leaves in a shaker. Muddle the basil gently, then add ice and shake vigorously. Double strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.
Spicy Paloma
A paloma gets a kick with the addition of chili salt. Rim a highball glass with chili salt, then fill with ice. Combine 60ml tequila, 30ml fresh grapefruit juice, 15ml fresh lime juice, and 10ml agave syrup. Top with soda water and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
Frozen Strawberry Margarita
This frozen treat is perfect for a poolside party. Blend 100g frozen strawberries, 60ml tequila, 30ml fresh lime juice, 20ml triple sec, and 20ml simple syrup with a cup of ice until smooth. Serve in a margarita glass with a strawberry garnish.
Mango Lassi Cocktail
Inspired by the Indian drink, this cocktail combines mango, yogurt, and rum. Blend 100g ripe mango, 60ml white rum, 30ml fresh lime juice, 20ml honey, and 50ml plain yogurt with ice until creamy. Pour into a glass and garnish with a mint sprig.
Holland emphasizes that these recipes are flexible and can be adjusted to personal taste. She also recommends using fresh ingredients whenever possible for the best flavor. "Summer is about enjoying good times with friends, and these cocktails are designed to be easy to make and share," she says.
