Lululemon Apologizes for Japanese Drum at Great Wall

Lululemon, the Canadian athletic apparel company, has issued an apology after facing backlash for incorporating a Japanese drum performance into a yoga event held at the Great Wall of China. The event, which aimed to promote wellness and cultural exchange, drew criticism from Chinese netizens who deemed the choice culturally insensitive.

Cultural Sensitivity Concerns

The controversy erupted when videos and images from the event circulated on social media, showing participants practicing yoga while a group performed traditional Japanese taiko drumming. Many Chinese users expressed disappointment, arguing that the Great Wall is a symbol of Chinese heritage and that the use of Japanese cultural elements was inappropriate given historical tensions between the two countries.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Lululemon acknowledged the misstep and expressed regret. “We sincerely apologize for the oversight in our programming. Our intention was to celebrate diversity and unity, but we recognize that we fell short in respecting the cultural significance of the location,” the company said.

Company Response

Lululemon emphasized that it values cultural sensitivity and will review its event planning processes to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company also thanked those who provided feedback, stating that it is committed to learning from the experience.

The event was part of Lululemon’s global “Be Well” initiative, which includes yoga sessions and wellness activities in iconic locations worldwide. The Great Wall event featured local and international instructors and was intended to foster a sense of community.

This is not the first time a Western brand has faced criticism for cultural missteps in China. In recent years, several companies have been called out for insensitivity toward Chinese culture, highlighting the importance of local knowledge and consultation when organizing events in the country.
