Two Men Stabbed in Carlton on New Year's Eve

Two men are in hospital with serious stab wounds after an attack on Lygon Street in Carlton on New Year's Eve. Police were called to the popular dining strip around 11:45pm, where they found a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old with serious injuries.

Ambulance Victoria and Fire Rescue Victoria also attended the scene. The victims were taken to hospital in critical condition, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say a group of up to seven males armed with knives and machetes attacked the men outside a restaurant before fleeing in vehicles. Detectives from the Melbourne Crime Investigation unit are investigating whether the attack was targeted.

Victoria Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Tim Tulley described the incident as concerning. He warned that carrying edged weapons without exemption could lead to jail, hospital, or the cemetery. The Victorian government banned the sale and ownership of machetes last year, unless a valid exemption is held.

Acting Premier Ben Carroll stated there is zero tolerance for crime in Victoria, noting that fewer knives are on the streets due to an amnesty and increased police powers. Acting Superintendent Chris Hamilton confirmed the attack is not linked to New Year's Eve celebrations.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have asked anyone with information or footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
