Three-Legged Dog Returned to Shelter After One Night

RSPCA WA is urging the public to make informed adoption decisions after a three-legged dog named Pixel was returned to the shelter just one night after being adopted, following more than four months in care.

Pixel, a brindle mixed breed, came into the RSPCA’s care after being hit by a car in Balcatta. His owner surrendered him due to an inability to afford the necessary veterinary care. Despite efforts to save his injured leg, it had to be amputated because of severe damage.

After recovering well, Pixel spent 145 days at the Malaga shelter waiting for a new home. Last week, a family adopted him after multiple visits and discussions with staff about his care and three-legged mobility. However, he was returned the next day due to concerns that his three-legged status was “cruel,” despite being fully recovered and pain-free.

RSPCA WA shelter manager Emily Farrell noted that some animals are returned for reasons unrelated to behavior or health, such as a dog surrendered because its fur didn’t match the family’s curtains, a cat returned for being awake at night, and a dog returned for being “too big” after multiple meet-and-greets.

Pixel, who is celebrating his first birthday this week, is described as gentle and resilient, slowly building confidence. He would benefit from a home with older children and a friendly, confident dog. Farrell remains hopeful he will find the right home soon, stating, “Pixel did everything right—he was settling in, calm, and starting to feel safe. He waited 145 days for a home; I just hope he doesn’t have to wait that long again.”
