Stockton Ferry Service Cancelled, Christmas Return Uncertain

Stockton ferry services remain cancelled until further notice due to ongoing mechanical issues with both vessels. The MV Shortland was withdrawn from service on Saturday during a major protest event, leaving hundreds of passengers reliant on replacement buses via Stockton Bridge.

Sources indicate the breakdown was inevitable due to prolonged maintenance delays. The Newcastle Herald reports that engine trouble caused the ferry to collide with wharves on four occasions since November 12, with incidents reported to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA confirmed awareness of three incidents and is investigating a fourth.

A Keolis Downer Hunter spokesperson apologized for the inconvenience and stated they acted promptly upon identifying the mechanical issue. The MV Hunter remains out of service due to the lack of a suitable slipway for repairs, though Transport for NSW hopes to return it by Christmas.

Regular commuters face increased travel times of up to an hour via bus. Stockton Community Group member Alison Rigby expressed frustration, noting that a substitute ferry would be provided for similar services in Sydney. Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp criticized the prolonged maintenance and called for an immediate solution, emphasizing the fleet's age of nearly 40 years.

Transport for NSW is considering craning the vessel out of water or hiring interim ferries, but a slipway remains the preferred repair method. The MV Shortland's engine stalling is attributed to a potential hydraulic steering system issue, with repairs ongoing and no estimated return date.
