Shark Alert Issued for Albany Beach After Whale Carcass Spotted

A shark alert has been issued for the Great Southern coast in Western Australia after a whale carcass was found floating near Nanarup Beach, close to Albany. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) issued the warning on Christmas Day at approximately 9:10 am.

The presence of the whale carcass could attract sharks close to shore, prompting authorities to urge water users to exercise caution in the area. DPIRD officers are monitoring the situation, and the City of Albany has placed warning signs on the beach.

Beachgoers are advised to adhere to any closures implemented by rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers, and Surf Life Saving WA. The public is encouraged to use their sea sense and stay informed about shark activity through the SharkSmart website, the SharkSmart WA app, or Surf Life Saving WA’s X feed.
