A Melbourne woman received an unwelcome surprise on Sunday when she discovered a 1-metre-long venomous tiger snake coiled around her Christmas tree. The reptile had entered her suburban home through an open door before weaving itself among the decorations.
Snake catcher Barry Goldsmith was called to remove the snake. He praised the woman's calm reaction, noting that she left the room, placed a towel under the door to contain the snake, and contacted him promptly.
Tiger snakes are highly venomous and commonly found along Australia's coast. The species is protected in most Australian states, and this particular snake was released back into the wild after its removal.
Goldsmith, who is accustomed to finding snakes in unexpected locations, said he has previously discovered them in ugg boots, washing machines, dog kennels, cat boxes, toilets, kitchen cupboards, and bookcases.
