The Boorloo Bridge in Perth has been closed until Thursday after lighting fell from the structure on Monday. The $198 million bridge, which opened in December, links Victoria Park with Point Fraser in the CBD and is popular with cyclists and pedestrians.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said about 70 metres of plastic casing carrying wires and lights broke away and fell into the Swan River around 5pm. Nobody was injured. The casing was part of the bridge's feature lighting system.
Main Roads WA is installing steel cable ties to bolster the anchoring system holding the lighting casing. The work is expected to be completed by Thursday, when the bridge will reopen. In the meantime, cyclists and pedestrians are being diverted to the Causeway traffic bridge.
Ms Saffioti downplayed safety concerns, stating that such issues occur with new structures and noting the bridge is under warranty. The bridge was named WA Project of the Year in the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards.
