Perth Zoo's last remaining elephant, Putra Mas, is preparing for a journey across the Nullarbor to his new home at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. The Asian elephant's move is expected to take place at the end of next year.
John Lemon, Director of Life Sciences at Perth Zoo, discussed the logistics of the transfer with Jo Trilling. The operation involves careful planning to ensure Putra Mas's safety and comfort during the long trip across the desert.
Putra Mas will be transported in a specially designed crate that allows him to stand and turn around. The crate will be loaded onto a truck for the road journey, with stops planned for rest and hydration.
Monarto Safari Park, located near Murray Bridge, is home to a herd of elephants and offers expansive habitats. The move is part of a cooperative breeding program aimed at ensuring the species' survival.
