Perth Zoo's last remaining elephant, Putra Mas, is preparing for a significant relocation to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. The journey will take the Asian elephant across the Nullarbor desert, marking the end of an era for the zoo.
John Lemon, Director of Life Sciences at Perth Zoo, discussed the complex logistics involved in transporting the elephant. The move is expected to take place at the end of next year, requiring careful planning to ensure Putra Mas's safety and comfort during the long trip.
The relocation involves specialized transport arrangements, including a custom-built crate and a vehicle capable of carrying the elephant across the vast distance. Zoo staff are working closely with experts to prepare Putra Mas for the journey, which will be one of the longest elephant transfers in Australia.
Putra Mas has been a beloved resident at Perth Zoo, and his departure will leave the zoo without elephants for the first time in decades. Monarto Safari Park, a large open-range zoo, will provide a new home where Putra Mas can join other elephants.
