New $2.2m Bird Watching Facility Opens At Lake Joondalup

A new bird-viewing structure and boardwalk has opened at Lake Joondalup, providing visitors and birdwatchers with a purpose-built space to enjoy views of the lake and its wildlife. The two-level facility, located just north of Rotary Park, cost $2.2 million and was designed to blend into its natural surroundings.

The design was inspired by the shape of a wetland bird’s nest, allowing visitors to observe birds and wildlife without disturbing their habitat. The lower level offers universal access for all ages and abilities, while the upper level maximizes scenic views.

Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken, State Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn, Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton, and councillors Paul Miles and Eman Seif officially opened the facility last Friday. Aitken said the platform was long-awaited and represents a significant investment in improving community access to local natural areas.

The project was jointly funded by State Government grants totalling $1.936 million and the City of Wanneroo, which contributed $268,935. Construction began in April 2025, following consultation with the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation and neighbouring landowners.

Lake Joondalup is the largest freshwater lake north of the Swan River and a Class A reserve, home to abundant native wildlife. More than 120 bird species have been recorded in Yellagonga Regional Park, where the lake is located, including at least 37 waterbirds and 47 land-dwelling species.
