A massive warehouse fire in Perth's south has prompted a hazardous materials warning, with toxic smoke spreading across several suburbs. The blaze broke out at an industrial facility on Port Road in Kwinana Beach around 1:30 PM on Friday, sending thick black smoke into the air.
Authorities issued a HAZMAT alert, advising residents in Kwinana Beach, Kwinana, Medina, Orelia, Parmelia, Bertram, Wellard, Leda, and East Rockingham to stay indoors with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should be switched off to prevent drawing in fumes. Emergency services urged people to avoid the area and follow instructions from crews on site.
The fire comes as Perth endures its third heatwave in as many weeks, with temperatures exceeding 43°C in some areas. The city's CBD reached 42°C, while Pearce recorded 44.8°C and parts of the Swan Valley topped 43°C.
Meanwhile, firefighters are also battling an out-of-control bushfire in Perth's north, threatening homes in Spearwood, Lake Coogee, Bibra Lake, and Yangebup. A watch and act alert is in place, with residents warned of potential threats to lives and property. The fire is moving south and remains uncontained, with ground and aerial crews working to control it.
One local described the bushfire as frightening, saying it came too close for comfort. Perth is forecast to reach 41°C on Saturday and 37°C on Sunday.
