Residents in flood-ravaged far north Queensland are bracing for yet another wet weather system. A monsoon trough moving over northern Australia has prompted a severe weather warning for already sodden parts of the region.
The Bureau of Meteorology's Senior Forecaster Dean Narramore warned that the trough could bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to areas still recovering from previous disasters. Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said authorities are on high alert and ready to respond.
Kiley Hanslow, chief executive of the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, expressed concern for vulnerable communities. Meanwhile, Mayor Shane Sali of the City of Greater Shepparton noted that lessons from past floods have improved preparedness.
Heavy boulders have already washed down across the Captain Cook Highway at Rex Lookout, north of Cairns, as of December 18, 2023, highlighting the ongoing risk from unstable terrain.
