Mission Australia marks 50 years of Christmas Lunch in the Park in Perth

Mission Australia's Christmas Lunch in the Park in Perth is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, having started in 1975 as a small sausage sizzle for the homeless. The event has grown into the largest of its kind in Australia, providing a three-course meal, entertainment, and companionship for the city's most vulnerable people.

The inaugural lunch was organized by what was then called Jesus People Welfare Services, who approached city businesses for food donations to hold a Christmas BBQ at Moort-ak Waadiny/Wellington Square. Over the decades, the event has expanded to include free haircuts, showers, clothing, gifts for children, and care packs for adults.

Redcliffe resident Robert D'Souza has volunteered for 27 of the 50 years. He said, 'One thing I've loved over the last 27 years is seeing people enjoying the spirit of Christmas Lunch in the Park — especially those who may otherwise spend the day alone.'

Mission Australia event manager Carley Smith noted the growing need amid the housing and cost-of-living crisis. 'Sadly, the need in WA continues to grow,' she said. The event relies on more than 350 volunteers and donations, with $140 providing lunch, gifts, and care packs for a family of four.

Volunteer registrations close on November 10. Those interested can sign up or donate at christmaslunchinthepark.com.au.
