A lone pine tree, grown from seeds of the original Gallipoli tree, has been planted at Ocean Reef Marina to mark Remembrance Day 2025. The tree was donated by Joondalup City RSL president Rick Green and will serve as a focal point for reflection near the new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club facility and Anzac Memorial Arch.
Lone pines are grown from seeds that come directly from the tree at Gallipoli, where Australian soldiers fought in 1915 during World War I. During the Gallipoli campaign, 8709 Australian soldiers were killed and more than 18,000 were wounded.
Since the end of the war, seedlings descended from the original lone pine have been planted across Australia as living memorials. The tree in Joondalup was unveiled during a Remembrance Day ceremony, marking 107 years since the Armistice ended WWI and 80 years since the end of World War II.
Newly elected Joondalup Mayor Daniel Kingston, Federal Member for Moore Tom French, Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton, and Mr Green were among the dignitaries to attend the ceremony. Mr Green said he was honoured to contribute to the new development, stating, 'The centennial lone pine connects us directly to Gallipoli and the legacy of those who served.'
Mayor Kingston said the planting was a meaningful addition to the Ocean Reef Marina precinct, calling it 'a living memorial to the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women' and 'a symbol of peace and hope for future generations.'
