A serious crash on the Kwinana Freeway in Perth caused significant traffic disruptions and halted train services on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred just south of the North Lake and Armadale Road interchange around 1pm.
Southbound traffic was heavily congested for almost 8 kilometres, coming to a standstill through Jandakot and Cockburn. The crash, involving a car and a truck, damaged rail infrastructure in the freeway median, leading to the cancellation of Mandurah line train services in both directions for several hours.
Transperth announced just before 6pm that Mandurah line services had resumed between Elizabeth Quay and Rockingham, but not to the usual timetable. The Thornlie-Cockburn Line was also briefly affected but resumed operations. Train replacement buses ran between Elizabeth Quay and Aubin Grove, with extensive queues reported.
The driver of the car, a woman in her 60s, escaped with non-life threatening injuries. The white car was extremely damaged, and the truck's trailer lost a large set of wheels. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but damage to overhead power lines brought more than 10 workers to the scene.
The incident also caused delays on the Yanchep line further north. The cancelled train services impacted travel for attendees of the AC/DC concert at Perth Stadium that evening.
