A firefighter has been injured while battling a major blaze at the Viva Energy oil refinery in Corio, Geelong, which broke out late Wednesday night. The fire, which produced explosions and flames, has raised concerns about fuel supplies as the facility produces 50% of Victoria's and 10% of Australia's fuel.
Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed the fire was extinguished by midday Thursday, but crews remain on site. The injured firefighter's condition has not been disclosed. The blaze was contained to the 'mogas' section where motor gasoline is produced, with an equipment failure cited as the cause.
Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen acknowledged the incident will impact fuel supplies, though the extent is unclear. Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt stated the focus is on site safety before assessing production impacts. Refinery manager Bill Patterson noted other units may compensate for lost capacity.
Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj described the fire as 'unprecedented' and a shock to management. The Australian Workers Union branch secretary Ronnie Hayden said the refinery 'looked like a war zone' when the fire erupted.
