A 71-year-old woman has died after being struck by a police vehicle in Cairns on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the intersection of Lily and Sheridan Streets around 7am, according to police.
Officers provided immediate medical assistance, but the woman, a Trinity Beach resident, was later declared dead at Cairns Hospital. Lily Street between Digger and Sheridan Streets was closed for investigation but has since reopened.
Deputy Commissioner John Tims said a thorough investigation is underway by Ethical Standards Command, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission and the coroner. Two senior constables and a sergeant were in the car at the time.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward. The Queensland Police Union confirmed the officers were attempting to apprehend an offender when the collision occurred, and that the police vehicle's lights were activated.
