Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific has announced a new partnership with Perth-based charity Wheelchairs For Kids Australia, allowing Cathay members to donate Asia Miles or miles plus cash to support the delivery of wheelchairs to children in need around the world.
A Cathay Pacific spokesperson highlighted the global shortage of wheelchairs for children in developing countries, noting that over 10 million are currently needed. Since its inception in 1998, Wheelchairs for Kids Australia has delivered more than 66,000 all-terrain wheelchairs to 80 countries, all free of charge.
Through the partnership, Cathay members can donate from 3,140 Miles ($30) for a front tray, basket and toy kit, up to 31,420 Miles ($300) for a complete wheelchair with toys and a rug. The initiative aims to tap into a new global donor base through Cathay's network.
Frosti Lau, Cathay Regional General Manager for Southeast Asia and Oceania, stated that the airline is committed to being a force for positivity in the communities it serves, with a focus on youth development. He noted Cathay's 55-year commitment to Perth and expressed excitement about supporting children across the network.
Wheelchairs for Kids Australia operates with over 250 regular volunteers, averaging 74 years of age. The charity's locally designed wheelchairs are durable, adjustable, and meet World Health Organisation standards. Brother Thomas Oliver (Olly) Pickett AM, a volunteer for over 25 years who played a key role in developing the wheelchair design, was named Senior Australian of the Year in 2024.
