Bureau of Meteorology Defends $4M Website Upgrade Amid Public Backlash

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has defended its new $4 million website after widespread criticism from the public. The site launched last Wednesday as severe storms and extreme heat affected parts of Australia.

Social media and radio talkback were flooded with complaints about the refreshed design. Bureau meteorologist Michael Logan told ABC Statewide Drive Victoria that the update was necessary, as the old site had not seen significant upgrades in over a decade.

Logan said the redesign was part of a broader IT refresh aimed at improving security and stability, while also meeting modern accessibility standards. The cost of the upgrade spanned several years, including community consultation and adjustments based on feedback.

The BOM website is extremely popular, recording 2.6 million views on launch day alone. Logan acknowledged the new site has been difficult to navigate but expressed hope that users will adapt over time. He added that the Bureau will review feedback and consider further changes.
