Major Rain Event to Drench Australia, Bringing Flood and Storm Risks

A major rain system is sweeping across Australia, bringing flooding risks, damaging winds and dangerous surf to several states. Forecasters warn some regions could see their heaviest falls in months as upper-level troughs and low pressure systems move across the nation.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Jonathan How said a 'significant rain event' was developing across eastern Australia, with heavy rainfall likely from Monday to Friday night. Rainfall totals could exceed 100mm in parts of NSW and southern Queensland, while coastal areas may receive more than 150mm.

Severe thunderstorms are expected across inland NSW, the NSW south coast and South East Queensland, bringing risks of heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail. Hazardous surf and marine wind warnings have been issued for parts of NSW and Queensland, with gale warnings for the NSW Eden Coast.

Flood risks are being monitored in northeastern NSW and South East Queensland, while elevated river levels continue in South Australia's inland river systems near Innamincka. Western Australia will also be impacted by two separate systems, with a cold front midweek and a potentially more severe low pressure system over the weekend.
