Asbestos Shards Found at Hillarys Dog Beach Prompt Clean-Up and Warning

An urgent warning has been issued for Perth beachgoers after shards of potentially deadly asbestos were discovered in sand dunes at Hillarys dog beach. A clean-up effort began on Tuesday, but experts warn that broken pieces may still pose a serious threat.

It remains unclear whether the asbestos was dumped or washed ashore, but dangerous fibres have been exposed just metres from where families and pets walk. Melita Markey, CEO of the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia, expressed concern, noting the material is friable and releasing fibres into the environment, increasing cumulative exposure.

Markey recommended removing the entire top layer of beach soil to minimise risk. She said she was shocked that asbestos could be dumped on the beach, calling it a sign of disrespect for West Australians. The City of Joondalup confirmed crews cleaned up on Tuesday morning, but shards were still visible in the afternoon, and noted that dumping materials on the beach is not uncommon.

One beachgoer said the potential exposure was worrying, citing awareness of asbestos dangers. The Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia suggested making asbestos disposal easier and cheaper, possibly through a manufacturer recall, to reduce illegal dumping. Authorities advise anyone who finds asbestos not to touch it and to call a professional for removal.
