Adelaide City councillor Eleanor Freeman is advocating for pop-up bike lanes in the city to mitigate the effects of the ongoing fuel crisis and support local businesses. Freeman, who also serves as a Board Director of Bike SA, highlighted the potential economic impact if visitors choose to stay away.
“We have four hundred thousand visitors a day,” Freeman said on ABC Radio Adelaide. “If people make that decision not to come in at all, there could be a really detrimental impact.”
Freeman pointed to successful examples from other cities during the COVID-19 pandemic. “During Covid, quite a few cities around the world did pop-up bike lanes – Paris, Sydney as well,” she said.
The proposal aims to encourage cycling as an alternative to driving, reducing reliance on fuel and easing traffic congestion. Freeman believes that temporary bike lanes could be implemented quickly and cost-effectively.
