Young SA Footballer Dies After On-Field Collision

A 20-year-old South Australian footballer has died after an on-field collision during a Hills Football League match in the Adelaide Hills. Antonio Loiacono was critically injured in an A-grade match between Birdwood and Gumeracha on Saturday and was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he died on Sunday afternoon.

Loiacono's brother, Jack, paid tribute to him as 'the most respectful, caring, loving and beautiful soul' and his 'best friend'. Birdwood Football and Netball Club expressed condolences, noting that despite his short time at the club, his leadership and care had a lasting impact.

Hills Football League president Joanne Purdie shared the league's 'deepest sympathy', saying the football community is in shock and sorrow. SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said Loiacono's death had shocked and saddened the league, extending sympathies to his family, friends, and teammates.
