Australians Rose Byrne and Jacob Elordi missed out on Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards, where One Battle After Another dominated, winning Best Picture. Paul Thomas Anderson claimed his first Oscar for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, while Sean Penn beat Elordi for Best Supporting Actor.
One Battle After Another also won Best Film Editing, and Cassandra Kulukundis took the inaugural Best Casting award. Sinners was another big winner, with Michael B. Jordan winning Best Leading Actor and Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the first woman to win Best Cinematography.
Rose Byrne lost Best Leading Actress to Jessie Buckley for Hamnet. Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, and F1 won Best Sound. KPop Demon Hunters made history with Golden winning Best Original Song, the first K-pop song to do so, and also won Best Animated Feature Film.
Frankenstein won three awards for makeup, costume design, and production design. Norwegian film Sentimental Value won Best International Film. The ceremony saw ties in voting, with only six ties in Oscar history, the most recent in 2013 for Sound Editing.
Despite no Australian winners, there was a local connection: Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who won Best Cinematography, is married to Australian cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, known for Animal Kingdom and Snowtown.
