Celebrating LGBTQ Representation in Film
In a recent feature, Guardian writers shared their personal favourite LGBTQ movie characters, highlighting the importance of diverse and authentic representation in cinema. The selection spans decades and genres, from classic queer-coded performances to modern groundbreaking roles.
Classics and Cult Favourites
Several writers chose iconic characters from films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Paris Is Burning. Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played by Tim Curry, was praised for his unapologetic queerness and defiance of gender norms. Meanwhile, the documentary Paris Is Burning was celebrated for its authentic portrayal of New York's drag ball culture in the 1980s.
Modern Milestones
More recent films also made the list, including Moonlight (2016) and Call Me by Your Name (2017). Chiron from Moonlight was lauded for his nuanced coming-of-age story as a Black gay man, while Elio and Oliver's summer romance in Call Me by Your Name was described as tender and universal.
Underrated Gems
Writers also highlighted lesser-known films such as Princess Cyd (2017) and Rafiki (2018). The former was praised for its gentle exploration of a teenage girl's sexuality, while the latter broke barriers as Kenya's first film to feature a lesbian romance, despite being banned in its home country.
Impact of Representation
According to GLAAD's annual Studio Responsibility Index, LGBTQ representation in major studio films has slowly increased, but still lags behind the actual population. The Guardian writers emphasized that these characters matter not only for LGBTQ audiences but for all viewers, fostering empathy and understanding.
As one writer noted, "Seeing yourself on screen is powerful. But seeing someone different from you, portrayed with humanity, is just as important."
