Anthony Hopkins, the Oscar-winning actor known for roles in The Silence of the Lambs and The Father, has released his debut single at the age of 88. The track, titled 'Music Was My First Desire', showcases Hopkins' lifelong passion for music, blending classical piano with spoken word.
A Lifelong Musical Passion
Hopkins, who has composed music for decades, said in a statement: 'Music has always been my first love. Acting came later, but music was my first desire.' The single is part of a forthcoming album, And the Waltz Goes On, which features original compositions and interpretations of classical pieces.
The actor began playing piano at age 17 and has written over 270 compositions. In 2017, he released a classical album, Composer, but 'Music Was My First Desire' marks his first vocal recording.
Collaboration and Production
The single was produced by Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite, known for his work with U2 and The Rolling Stones. Hopkins collaborated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma on the track, which features a haunting orchestral arrangement.
Proceeds from the single will benefit the Alzheimer's Association, a cause close to Hopkins after his father's battle with the disease.
Critical Reception
Early reviews have been positive. Rolling Stone called it 'a surprising and moving debut,' while Classic FM noted that 'Hopkins delivers the spoken word passages with the same gravitas he brings to his acting.' The single is available on all major streaming platforms.
Hopkins continues to act, recently completing filming for the upcoming thriller The Son. He said: 'Music and acting are two sides of the same coin. Both require truth and vulnerability.'
