The iconic Scarborough Hotel is set to undergo a significant transformation as its owners propose replacing a small car park with an inviting outdoor cabana and seating area. Revised plans for this coastal enhancement have been formally submitted to Wollongong City Council for approval.

New Vision for Historic Venue

Under the new proposal, the hotel's southern car park will be completely redeveloped into a landscaped outdoor space featuring comfortable seating and a cabana structure. Importantly, the main northern parking area will remain unchanged, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors.

The development application shows the proposed cabana would include seating facing the hotel, extensive landscaping, and a rear fence with gate access to the existing beer garden. The design carefully considers neighbour privacy while preserving those priceless ocean views that make the venue so special.

Addressing Community Concerns

Epochal Hotels, who purchased the establishment from Bruce Gordon in April last year, have proactively included measures to protect residential amenity. The hotel briefly closed between June 30 and July 4 during the ownership transition, and now the new owners are focusing on improvements.

Documents submitted with the application state: "The proposed Scarborough Hotel redevelopment does not involve changes to the existing hotel building rather involves redevelopment and landscaping works in the outdoor area that improve the amenity of the site."

Acoustic screening has been incorporated on the southern side of high-occupancy outdoor areas, though planners note these measures weren't strictly required. An independent acoustic study concluded the cabana area would create "no appreciable increase in noise levels" compared to existing hotel operations.

Next Steps for the Proposal

The development application is currently on public exhibition, with community feedback accepted until November 20. This gives local residents and stakeholders the opportunity to review the detailed plans and provide input before council makes its final decision.
