An Airbus A320 carrying 160 passengers has taken off for the first time on a direct flight from Newcastle to Hobart, marking a new air link between the Hunter region and Tasmania. The Jetstar service, which will operate three times weekly, is expected to significantly boost tourism in both cities.
Jetstar's executive manager commercial, Lyle Brownscombe, said the route connects Newcastle and Hobart for the first time, allowing Hunter residents to access Tasmania's wilderness, food, and wine without connecting through other cities. He noted that the service will also bring more visitors to Newcastle's beaches and wineries.
The Mercer family from Port Stephens booked the inaugural flight. Callum Mercer said flying from Newcastle was much easier than traveling via Sydney, and without the direct flight, they would have chosen a different destination.
Tourism Tasmania director Steve Farquer welcomed travelers to experience the state's wilderness walks, beaches, museums, vineyards, and distilleries. The seasonal service runs until April 21, 2026, providing over 22,000 low-cost seats.
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said the route strengthens regional access and builds on the airport's growth after launching its international terminal and direct flights to Perth and Bali. Hobart Airport COO Matt Cocker noted that the direct flight saves time and money compared to traveling via Sydney, unlocking the largest population area in Australia not previously connected directly to Hobart.
