Sydney Sandwich Shop Wins Australia's Best Sanga Award

A hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop in Sydney's eastern suburbs has been named Australia's best sandwich maker. South Dowling Sandwiches in Darlinghurst won the top spot in the 'Best Sanga' category of Wotif's Uniquely Aussie Awards, following a public vote.

Owner Avi Labi, who took over the shop 14 years ago, credits the success to the signature ingredient in his most popular sandwich, 'The Biatch'. Named after his daughter, the $15 sandwich features chilli chicken, red pesto, herb mayo, lettuce, rocket, pickles, red cabbage, bocconcini, and the shop's signature caramelised carrots.

Labi said many have tried to copy the sandwich but fall short. He expressed gratitude to his team and loyal customers who voted for the shop. South Dowling Sandwiches also has locations in Alexandria and Millers Point.
